When I need to Restart My Phone Adapter and Network Devices?

    A

An internet outage, a firmware upgrade, a power outage, a power surge or a change in the network configuration can cause a disruption in your MacTel service. If you experience a loss of service, try to restart your network first.

A network restart, which is also known as a Power Cycle, allows your MacTel adapter to reconnect to the MacTel network. To power cycle your network, follow these steps:

    1. Disconnect the power cord from the back of your internet modem, your router (if you are using one), and your MacTel telephone adapter. Make sure all the lights on each device go completely shut it down.

    2. Check and confirm that all the Ethernet cables in your network are connected properly and securely.

    a. If you are not using a router: Ensure one Ethernet cable is connected from your internet modem to the blue port in your MacTel adapter.

    b. If you are using a router: Ensure one Ethernet cable is connected from your internet modem to either the blue port in your MacTel adapter or to the WAN port in your router.

    i) If the cable from your modem is connected to your MacTel adapter, you should have another Ethernet cable connected from the yellow port on your MacTel adapter

ii) If the cable from your modem connects to your router, you should have another Ethernet cable connected from any available LAN port on your router to the blue port on your MacTel adapter.

    3. Reconnect the power to your modem first and wait for the status lights, such as the Power and Online (or Link) lights, to indicate it has fully restarted. On some modems this could take up to a minute.

NOTE: If your modem does not connect to the internet, contact your ISP to resolve the issue.

    4. Connect the power to the other devices in your network, beginning with the one connected directly to the modem and continuing until all devices have restarted. Make sure each device has fully powered on before restarting the next.

    5. Pick up the phone connected to your MacTel adapter and listen for a dial tone. If you still do not hear a dial tone you may need to reset the connection from your MacTel adapter to your telephone:

    a. Disconnect the power cord AND the telephone cord from the back of your MacTel adapter.

    b. Unplug the power to the main base of your telephone, wait a few seconds and plug it back in.

    d. Reconnect the telephone cord to the MacTel adapter and check for a dial tone.

How to do Port Forwarding in your Router?

    A

If your MacTel adapter is located behind a router that has firewall capabilities, and you do not want to reconfigure your network, you may need to set up Port Forwarding for your MacTel service to operate properly.

Port Forwarding can solve issues related to:

Network addressing that may cause one-way audio.

    Registration Problems

    No audio at all

When you set up Port Forwarding, you are telling your router whenever data is received on a specified "port", send that data to a specific IP address.

The "port" being forwarded is not a physical port that you plug something into. Ports are used to identify data that is being sent over the Internet so that it will be received by the correct program. For example, when you connect to a website, the information that is sent to your computer is sent on port 80. Data received on port 80 is processed by your web browser. There are more than 65,000 ports that computers use to send and receive data. MacTel uses only a few of these ports for phone calls.

All devices on a network have IP addresses. By default, most devices are automatically assigned an IP address by the router the device is connected to. Since the router will not necessarily give the devices the same IP address every time, you will need to assign a static IP address to the MacTel adapter before setting up Port Forwarding. This will ensure the IP address of the adapter will not change. Instructions to assign a static IP address to your adapter are included in your adapter's user guide.

After you have assigned your MacTel adapter a static IP address, configure Port Forwarding on your router. Refer to your router's manual or the manufacturer’s website to learn how to configure Port Forwarding on your router.

Which Ports used by MacTel Adapters?

SIP: Port 5060 -5061 UDP (Used to send and receive SIP information)

RTP: Ports 10000-20000 UDP. (Used to send and receive RTP traffic) When a call is made, random ports between 10000 and 20000 are used to carry the conversation. If any of these ports are blocked, you may experience one way or no audio
